The Thrill

of victory!

The Agony of

de-feet!

We will be doing lots of walking on our European Escapade. Now, Europe is old. And they cling to their old ways. Yes, they have modern conveniences, and they even know how to Google, but somehow no one over here has figured out how to make a sidewalk.

Europe's sidewalks make your feet tired.

This is a good sidewalk. It is smooth, it is fairly even, it is easy on the feet and legs. It's easy to push a stroller on it. It's simple to roll a suitcase along it. Just because it's modern doesn't make it bad.

This is a bad sidewalk. The Romans built this in Cologne, Germany between 50 and 38BC. There are bad sidewalks all over Europe and we will have to walk on many of them.

This is a sidewalk in Genoa, Italy in 2010.

And here's one in Barcelona in 2011.

Look at this nice sidewalk in Cannes, France in 2010.

And only last month a new sidewalk was built not far from where I live.

Apologies to Bob Dylan, but The Times They Aren't a-Changing.

They key to sidewalk survival in Europe is all in the footwear. Here are some suggestions:

Shoes for a rainy day.

Docksiders.

This pair is a-peeling.

Them's fighting shoes.

Z-coils will put a spring in your step.

Bad sidewalk! Bad, bad sidewalk!

Are your feet happy now?

I hope I'm not putting my foot in my mouth, but you could just

Buy new feet.

Or better yet, when walking the sidewalks of Europe, always carry a Roadie full of wine!
